Water quality in Renton
I've posted about water quality in Rento on my blog and in other locations. To my (pleasant) surprise, it looks like EWG is monitoring our water somehow, and the results are not great. I guess our groundwater isn't as clean as I thought....

Do you filter your water? If so, what do you use?

Looking for a good person to repair a dishwasher

My dishwasher died last night, and so I'm now looking for someone in the Renton area to take a look and/or get a quote. I'm not sure if it's worth fixing or getting a new one. If anyone has had any good experiences, let me know!

Thanks

Washington Decline to Sign Referendum 71
There is a signature drive for referendum 71 to eliminate the Domestic Partnership Expansion Law of 2009 in Washington state. The new law gives many of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples, without changing the current state definition.

Cat Loving Volunteers Needed for Purrfect Pals! (Adoption Center at Southcenter PetsMart
Love cats and have two hours a week to spare? The Purrfect Pals Adoption Center in the Southcenter PetsMart is currently in need of cat loving volunteers to work with our rescued cats while they are waiting to be adopted. In addition to adults and seniors, we welcome teenagers who are 16+ (or 13+ with a parent/adult) and this is a great opportunity for summer! If you have two hours a week to spare and would like to make a difference in the lives of rescued cats, we would love to hear from you!  For more information, please email me or visit us online at www.purrfectpals.org.

Our current needs are:

*Weekday Mid-Morning and Evening Cleaners/Socializers (scooping litter, cleaning up any messes our "rock stars" make in their cages overnight, filling food and water dishes, letting the cats out to stretch and play, etc)

*Weekday and Weekend Adoption Counselors (answering questions about our cats, processing adoptions, etc)

*Weekend  Mid-Morning and Evening Cleaners/Socializers

*Morning, Mid-Day and Evening Cat Cuddlers (flex schedule - just come in and let the cats out of their cages to play and snuggle when you have time to spare)

Purrfect Pals is a nonprofit, no-kill cat shelter and sanctuary committed to rescuing and placing cats and kittens in loving, responsible homes. Purrfect Pals saves the lives of more than 2,500 homeless cats each year. In addition to adopting cats through PetsMart and our other partner stores’ adoption centers, we help place special needs cats and provide a comfortable long-term sanctuary for cats diagnosed with Feline leukemia and FIV positive cats. We also offer low cost spays/neuters for cats to low income individuals and families. PetsMart generously donates the space, food and litter in our Adoption Center.

All volunteers must attend an two hour Orientation in our Arlington shelter, held the last Saturday of every month. For more information regarding Purrfect Pals visit us online at www.purrfectpals.org.

Thanks!
Connie

Sprint cell coverage on Renton Hill
I was thinking about switching to Spring, but when I was looking at the coverage map, it looked like Renton Hill/Rolling Hills isn't very well covered. Does anyone have Spring in this area? How does it work for you?

Thanks!

Off-Leash Dog Park Meeting
March 4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Council Chambers - 7th Floor
Renton City Hall

I've heard that it's going in just upstream from the library, near the start of the trail. I'm quite happy that we won't have to drive to Grandview or Redmond to let the dogs run. :)

Odd election - time for die?

In the last election, we voted to have a Director of Elections for King County. I was a little iffy about the whole thing, and split the vote with my SO. The problem is, we now we have this position, and I have no idea who to vote for. To be honest, none of the people seem very compelling.

Seeing as there are six people up for election, I'm thinking dice. Unless someone knows some reason to vote for a particular person, I'm headed that direction. Anyone have any opinions?

Birdhouses in Renton
We recently put up a bird feeder, and I'm amazed how much fun it is to watch the birds. I want to it to the next level and build a birdhouse, but I don't know what kind of birds to try and attract. Does anyone in Renton Hill/Highlands/Rolling Hills areas have a bird house? If so, what kind of birds do you get? Any advice?

New dog bags?
Does anyone know why the dog-waste bags changed in the parks/trails? I really liked the old ones - they seemed nicely solid. When I pick up from the pavement, I don't need to worry about the bag scraping open!

Glass cutters?
I have a coffee table that I want to cover in glass. So I'm looking for a local glass shop that could cut and bevel the glass for use as coffee table surface. I know of a place in Seattle, but I want to use a local business if possible. Does anyone know of a good place?

Thanks,
Erick

Ale Houses
I know the Dog & Pony on North 4th and Park Ave. is a prime alehouse, and the Whistlestop on South 4th Street can be hit or miss with their service while their tap menu is good, is there any other good alehouses in Renton?

I'll be back in the area this summer.

Furniture...
So, I'm new to the area, and I'm trying to find some not horribly expensive furniture. Specifically- a couch.  Over the past three weeks, my husband and I have been searching craigslist, and every single time we call someone its sold, or they divulge its seedy (and cat hair coated) history, and since we're both allergic to animal dander, we just can't go in for that.

Can anyone tell me a place where I can get some soft, comfortable living room furniture that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Like I said, we've searched craigslist, and walmart and target just don't have stuff that works for us (we want a real couch, as we're well out of our college dorm years.)

Help? Please?

Thank you in advance for any leads, tips or ideas!
